Spotlight on NDHIN User Types

NDHIN engages many different user types that are outside the traditional hospital/clinic setting. We have a wide variety of users that utilize our services including our Clinical Portal and Direct Secure Messaging service and offer us quite unique perspectives on various ways it can be used in and outside of the clinical setting.

Types of unique users:

  • Social workers
  • Medical records staff
  • Chiropractors
  • EMS
  • Corrections
  • Home health & hospice
  • Long term care

Film Librarian, Kamie Gotvaslee with Trinity Health, shared her NDHIN experience. This is what she had to say:

“I like it, it’s easy to use.  We print off reports to attach to radiology imaging that we receive from outside facilities. We use it a lot and it helps us find where they had x-rays done as well. It’s a good tool to have.”

How do you use NDHIN? To share your user story or if you have questions regarding access to our services, contact us at ndhin@nd.gov.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the national health observance where we focus on promoting awareness that colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly preventable, treatable, and curable. Screening is recommended to begin at age 45 for those adults with low to moderate risk of developing CRC. Screening for CRC can be lifesaving, however, 28% of eligible adults in North Dakota are not current with this screening.

NDHIN provides its users many tools for comprehensively evaluating a patient with a cancer diagnosis. Patient history, labs, clinical notes, and even images in some instances are available for review within our Clinical Portal. We continue to strive to provide our users with valuable information at their fingertips.

Bismarck Cancer Center

Announcement

We are happy to announce that Bismarck Cancer Center is now sharing patient demographics and clinical documents with NDHIN!  Since cancer patients are considered one of the most vulnerable patient populations, the benefits of sharing this information electronically via NDHIN can lead to multiple opportunities for a patient’s care team.

  • Improves care coordination
  • Reduces medical errors
  • Provides for faster access to comprehensive patient information
  • Supports informed decision-making
  • Facilitates clinical research, and
  • Potentially improves patient outcomes, particularly for complex cancer cases by allowing multiple providers to collaborate seamlessly with the most up-to-date data across different healthcare settings.

Thank you, Bismarck Cancer Center for collaborating with NDHIN on this project! We strive to provide relevant information and value through our network to our users through our interoperability efforts.

If you would like additional information on how your organization may share data with NDHIN, contact us at ndhin@nd.gov.
